Wood-Mizer Announces Personal Best Contest

Wood-Mizer announced that the 2011 Personal Best Competition is open for entries. The contest is open to all Wood-Mizer sawmill owners interested in competing for their share of $20,000 in Wood-Mizer prize credits. Three awards are given in each of eight categories, including homes and major structures, small homes and cabins, large barns and garages, small barns and tool sheds, interior projects, exterior projects, “for the good of others” and unusual projects. KFIA Hosts Annual Meeting

The Kentucky Forest Industries Association completed its 46th annual meeting in Lexington, Ky., attended by over 320 members. New directors elected to the 2011 board included Casey Goodman, Tommy Steele, Tom DeFilippo and Tony Leanhart. Charles Courtney II and Darrin Gay were re-elected to the board. Award recipients included Angus MacLean, 2010 Tree Farmer of the Year; Mervin Strader, 2010 Logger of the Year; Ronald Taylor, 2010 Inspector of the Year; and Dick Wengert, 2010 Communicator of the Year.

Stihl Joins Park Improvement Efforts

Stihl, Inc. partnered with the city of Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation and K&D Round’s Landscape Services, a local lawn care company, to give back to the community as part of the third annual Professional Landcare Network Day of Service. Volunteers from Stihl and their families, K&D Round’s and city-trained personnel all participated in the event at Munden Point Park. Some of the improvements included tree pruning, shrub trimming, spreading mulch and pine straw, cleaning flowerbeds, sand volleyball court replenishment and playground mulch replenishment.

JP Carlton Announces New Dealership

JP Carlton announced a new addition to its dealer network. Southeastern Equipment will now carry the entire Carlton stump cutter and wood chipper lines. Southeastern, headquartered in Cambridge, Ohio, has branch locations throughout Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Kentucky and offers a highly trained staff of service technicians. Azavea Launches PhillyTreeMap

Azavea announced the launch of PhillyTreeMap, www.phillytreemap.org, a wiki-inspired Web application. It enables the public to collaborate with the project partners – City of Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission – to map, inventory and preserve the Philadelphia urban forest. With a free registration, users can add trees to the system, edit or add to existing tree records, and upload tree images.

The ALL Erection & Crane Rental Family of Companies has appointed Jeremy Hunter to the position of general manager of ALL Carolina Crane Rental of Wilmington, LLC. Previously, he served for 12 years as lead dispatch and logistics manager at the Atlanta branch of ALL Crane Rental of Georgia. Amanda Hunter, his wife, will join him in Wilmington. She served as accounts receivable and contracts manager at the Atlanta branch. She will provide organizational support, ideas and a wealth of productivity knowledge to the Wilmington branch.

Swingle Joins Cemetery Beautification Effort

Swingle Lawn, Tree & Landscape Care provided time, expertise and labor for the Colorado Association of Lawn Care Professionals’ third annual day of service at Riverside Cemetery, the oldest operating cemetery in Denver, Colo. Tom Lynch, lawn manager, helped with turf projects, while additional Swingle employees performed tree removals. The effort was provided in conjunction with the Professional Landcare Network’s National Day of Service.

McGinty Receives ILCA Award

Charlie McGinty, CEO of McGinty Bros., Inc., was presented with the 2010 Man of the Year award by the Illinois Landscape Contractors Association. The award recognizes a member who has had a positive impact on the quality of the industry through extraordinary leadership, teamwork and innovation. McGinty established his company in 1955 with his late brother, John. He has worked officially to support the industry by serving as a member of ILCA’s board of directors, president of the Illinois Commercial Arborists Association and on the board of the Illinois Turfgrass Foundation and the Professional Lawn Care Association of America.

WLCA Chapter Helps Out at Congdon

Members of the Wisconsin Landscape Contractors Association, Southeast Chapter, helped out with the spring cleanup at Congdon Gardens in Delavan, Wis. In addition to WLCA members, many of the gardens’ volunteers, along with Delavan Rotary Garden Foundation members, worked in the gardens, cleaning, raking and picking up debris.

The Irrometer Co. is celebrating 60 years of service to the landscape, agricultural, environmental and research markets. Demand for accurate soil moisture data and improved irrigation scheduling practices led to the development of a family of products that measure, monitor, sample and control soil moisture. The company was founded in 1951.
