Good News on Sudden Oak Death

According to a new study by University of California-Berkeley researchers, treating healthy trees with phosphonate can stem the spread of sudden oak death for up to two years. Trials involving the preventative fungicide showed that it provided protection for 18 months and in some cases up to two years. A separate examination of a commonly used treatment comprised of azomite soil amendments and a lime bark wash showed that it is ineffective at stopping the spread of the pathogen. Researchers did a direct comparison of the two treatments on potted oaks in greenhouses and did a field study using branches from infected trees in the lab.
