The 2016 International Tree Climbing Championship was held April 1-3 in San Antonio, Texas.

Participants and attendees celebrated the event’s 40th anniversary — the first ITCC in 1986 also was held at San Antonio’s Brackenridge Park. In addition to the competition, the event provided educational opportunities with demonstrations of safety and best practices along with industry vendor exhibits and public engagement activities.

The competition featured 64 climbers representing 18 countries. The 2016 ITCC champions were James Kilpatrick and Chrissy Spence, both of New Zealand. The championship was the first for Kilpatrick, and Spence became the first four-time female champion.
