WCISA Schedules Annual Conference

The Western Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture has scheduled its annual conference and trade show for May 1-4 at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, Calif. Women of Stihl Take Home Second World Championship Title 

The Women of Stihl firefighter relay team earned their second Fire-fighter Combat Challenge World Championship title in Las Vegas, Nev.

Based in Virgina Beach, Va., the team defeated Delray Boca Ladies from Delray Beach, Fla., and FoxForce 5/BSO Fire Rescue from Broward County, Fla. The Women of Stihl, from the Virginia Beach, Newport News and Hampton fire departments, are Amy Bielinski, Mary Colasanto, Abby Harms, Katie Hodge and Stacy Carrol. They are coached by Alana Cooper.

The challenge was developed as a competition for firefighters to encourage fitness and demonstrate the profession’s rigors to the public. Stihl is the official sponsor of the Women of Stihl team, as well as the Team Stihl men’s relay team.

Elkins Joins Davey; Cheever and Manos Promoted

Dale R. Elkins has joined The Davey Tree Expert Co. as director of management development for the commercial landscape services division. He will focus on the growth and development of the management and sales team. Elkins has over 25 years of commercial landscape and golf maintenance experience, having worked for TruGreen LandCare and OneSource Landscape and Golf Services. He is a graduate of Auburn University and is a certified landscape professional.

Davey has named Tim Cheever to the position of senior motor carrier safety specialist and John Manos to Northern motor carrier safety specialist in its safety department. Cheever will have expanded responsibility for motor carrier safety and compliance, and will continue to support corporate safety services in the South and West. Manos will be responsible for education, training and monitoring in the motor carrier safety program within Northern operations.

Green Industry Professionals Convene at ESGIS

The 2007 Empire State Green Industry Show attracted nearly 1,600 green industry professionals. The event continues to thrive with a trade show including over 200 exhibit booths as well as association events and educational sessions presented by the New York State Turfgrass Association (NYSTA), New York State Arborists, New York State Nursery & Landscape Association (NYSNLA) and New York State Flower Industries.  

During the show, NYSTA presented the Citation of Merit Award to James Hornung Sr., owner of Elbers Landscape Service, Inc. Hornung served on the NYSTA board of directors and became its president in 2004. He is a past president of the Western New York State Nursery and Landscape Association and has served on the board of directors of NYSNLA and the Buffalo Pest Management Board.

Larry Wilson, chairman of the New York Alliance for Environmental Concerns, received NYSTA’s Friend of the Green Industry Award, which is given to individuals who have excelled in support of the industry. Wilson owns Lawrence Landscape Design and is a past president and chairman of government affairs for the New York State Turf and Landscape Association.  

Steinmetz Named CEO of Middleton

Sunair Services Corp. has appointed Charles Steinmetz to the position of CEO of Middleton Pest Control. Steinmetz was the majority owner of Middleton Pest Control from 1977 until it was purchased by Sunair in June 2005, and has served as a director of Sunair since then. Steinmetz has been in the pest control industry for over 40 years, serving in various capacities with Orkin Exterminating Co., Truly Nolen, Inc. and All America Termite and Pest Control, Inc. He received his degree in entomology from the University of Florida.

Jasperson Leaves Mid-Am Board, Kurth Comes Aboard

Mid-Am President Randy Jasperson has left the board after two years as president and 12 years of service representing the Wisconsin Green Industry Federation. Jasperson began his tenure on the board in 1996.

Terry Kurth, a current WGIF board member and past president, will serve as Mid-Am president. Kurth has also served as a director and as president of LaWN and the Professional Lawn Care Association of America, now known as PLANET.
